Want to Skip Operating System selection on boot

If you have more then one OS installed on your computer, but you don’t use it very often, then you would probably want to boost up the startup by skiping the OS selection screen.First make sure your windows is set not to hide “protected oporating system files” (by going to Control Panel\Folder Options\View tab, and ucheck the “hide protected oporating system files” checkbox) Edit the boot.ini file in your c: drive, so that the timeout value will be “0″ (timeout=0)This will make your pc skip the os selection menu on startup. If you ever want to use your other os you can change the value back to what it was in the first place.

Want to set faster startup for windows xp

If your computer takes a long time to become useable after starting up or logging on, or you want a clean boot of Winodws XP try this,Click Start > Run > Type “msconfig” > On the Startup tab click Disable All and on the Services tab check the Hide All Microsoft Service box and then click Disable All. Click Restart and Windows XP will restart with only the system services and applications running resulting in a vey fast logon / startup.*******N.B This tweak will disable all non-system startup sevices and applications, so if you have anything you want to run in the background such as anti virus software do not disable that item.

Ten tips to increase your Windows security

1-always protect your Administrator account by creating password, just go to Control Panel > User Accounts, select your account and the click on “create a password for your account”.

2-Protect your account by Password protect your screen saver, go to Control Panel > Display, Click on the Screen Saver tab and then check on resume password protect.

3- Setup a BIOS Password to protect your PC Setup application.

4- Always force you windows automatic update on, go to Control Panel > Automatic Updates and then Select the first option to have each update download and install automatically.

5- Install an Internet Security Suite such as “Kaspersky Internet Security”, “Norton Internet Security” or “Mcafee Internet Security”. And turn on software automatic update.

6- If you don’t have enough budgets to buy an Internet Security Suite, Turn on the Windows Firewall. Go to > Control Panel > Windows Firewall and click on under the General tab. And Install an antivirus program, turn on automatic updates, and set up a regular scanning schedule.

7- Never use same username and/or password for all of your accounts in Internet.

8- Turn off file sharing in Windows Explorer. Open Explorer, click Tools > Folder Options >View. Then Scroll to the bottom, uncheck Use simple file sharing, and click Apply.

9- Increase your Internet Explorer security settings. Click Tools > Internet Options> Privacy and move the slider to High.

10- Turn on your Internet Explorer’s pop-up blocker. Click Tools > Internet Options > Popup Blocker Settings > and then choose default.

Safely Resetting Your iPod

If your iPod seems frozen, confused, or otherwise unresponsive, you can reset it without losing your music and data files. Some settings, like Bookmarks in long audio book files and On-the-Go Playlists, may not be preserved, but at least you can get things running again with this easy quick fix: 1. Make sure the battery is charged and then slide the Hold switch on and off again. 2. Press and hold down the Menu and center Select buttons. 3. Hold the buttons down until you see the Apple logo appear on the screen. This could take several seconds (but less than ten) to kick in, and you may have to do it twice, but keep pressing until you see the Apple logo.If the technology gods are smiling, the iPod goes through its little start-up sequence and then returns you to the main menu.A stalled or befuddled iPod Shuffle may also need a good firm reset from time to time, but like the Shuffle itself, resetting it is a bit simpler than wrestling with a regular iPod: Turn the On/Off switch to the Off position, wait five seconds or so, and then flip it back to the On position.

How to increase broadband connection speed in Windows XP/2003?

To speed up the Internet connection speed we need to configure a special buffer in the computer's memory in order to enable it to better deal with interrupts made from the NIC or the USB modem. This tip is only recommended if you have 256MB RAM or higher.

Step #1 - Identify the IRQ used by the NIC/USB modem

Follow these steps:
1.Open the System Information tool by running MSINFO32.EXE from the Run command.
2.Expand System Summary > Hardware Resources > IRQs.
3.Look for the listing made for your NIC (in my case - a Intel(R) PRO/100+ Management Adapter). Note the IRQ next to the specified line (in my case - IRQ21).
In case of USB modems you will first need to find the right USB device used by your modem. Follow these steps:
1.Open the Device Manager tool by running DEVMGMT.MSC from the Run command (or by right-clicking My Computer > Hardware tab > Device Manager button).
2.Scroll down to Universal Serial Bus controllers and expand it.
3.Right-click the USB Root Hub and select Properties. Note that you might need to do so for all listed USB Root hubs (if there are more than one) in order to find the right one.
4.In the Power tab, look for your USB ADSL modem.
5.In the Resources tab look for the assigned IRQ (in this case - IRQ21).
6.This is the IRQ we're looking for.
Lamer note: IRQs and modem names might vary...
Step #2 - Modify the system.ini file
Follow these steps:
1.Run SYSEDIT.EXE from the Run command.
2.Expand the system.ini file window.
3.Scroll down almost to the end of the file till you find a line called [386enh].
4.Press Enter to make one blank line, and in that line type
IrqX=4096
where X is the designated IRQ number we found in step #1, in my case it's IRQ21.
Note: This line IS CASE SENSITIVE!!!
5.Click on the File menu, then choose Save.
6.Close SYSEDIT and reboot your computer.
Done. Speed improvement will be noticed after the computer reboots.

Want to set keyboard alarm

First, go to Start, Control Panel and click on the Accessibility Options link.Click Accessibility Options once more and then choose the Keyboard tab.Under the ToggleKeys section, checkmark the box that says "Use ToggleKeys" and then click OK.That little check then activates the beeping sound and you will hear that every time you hit any of those keys.Once you hear that beep, you'll know one of those keys was hit and you can then go and undo it. Now, you can have your screen flash at you when one of those keys is hit as well.To do that, go back to the Accessibility Options window, but choose the Sound tab this time.Check the box next to "Use SoundSentry" and choose which way you would like to be warned from the drop down menu.We personally like the "Flash active window" option, but choose one that will get your attention the best.Click OK when you're done and you'll be all set.Never again will you have to worry about not knowing when those keys are accidentally turned on and that's a big time saver for everyone!

Want to hide a drive!!!!

If you don’t want other users stumbling over a drive while browsing the computer through Explorer, this tweak may help out. Although this tweak will render the drive invisible in Windows Explorer, it will still be accessible through Windows’ search utility, as well as other third-party file managing applications. Microsoft Office applications will also be able to access the cloaked drive with no problem. To cloak a drive, open up regedit and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Policies/Explorer. Create/modify the DWORD value “NoDrives” to match a corresponding drive letter you wish to hide. A: 1; B: 2; C: 4; D: 8; E: 16; F: 32; G: 64; H: 128; I: 256; J: 512; etc. To hide multiple drives, just add the values together and enter the sum as the value for the DWORD value “NoDrives”. To hide all the drives, just enter the value 67108863.
Hope it is useful for u..

Restarting Windows Without Restarting Your PC

A modern PC with Vista Home Edition takes about one and a half minutes to boot. An older machine with XP is about the same. That’s 30 seconds for the PC itself (the BIOS) to boot up, plus a minute for the Windows operating system to boot.
Sometimes, you need to reboot Windows (e.g. when installing new software), but there is no need to restart BIOS, too. However, the default is to reboot both. (That’s called doing a “cold boot,” rather than a “warm boot.”) There’s a trick that works on both XP and Vista to get it to do a warm boot instead, thus saving you 30 seconds per cycle.
The trick is to hold down the SHIFT key when invoking the restart.
Windows Vista: Select Start, then hover over the right arrow that is to the right of the padlock icon until the pop-up menu appears that contains “restart” as one of it’s choices. Hold down the SHIFT key while clicking on the “restart” choice.
Windows XP: Select Start. Select “Shut Down…”. Change the drop-down combo box under “What do you want the computer to do?” to “Restart”. Hold down the SHIFT key while clicking on the “OK” button.

Updated on 27 May 2008:
As suggested by one of the reader Zamora525 another reason behind slow opening of your my computer may be due to a windows service called ‘windows image acuisitions (WIA)’ - Provides image acquisition services for scanners and cameras.
You need to stop it by the commands given below.
1. Open Start >> Run or press window+r
2. type net stop "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)"

Want to Automatically defrag drives with a new context menu item!

Create a new Registry import file named context_defrag.inf in Notepad (be sure to save with it with the Save as type set to All Files and not Text Documents) and place the following text inside:
; context_defrag.INF
; Adds Defrag to the right click context menu in Windows XP
[version]signature="$CHICAGO$"
[DefaultInstall]AddReg=AddMe
[AddMe]
HKCR,"Drive\Shell\Defrag\command",,,"DEFRAG.EXE %1"
Then, right-click and choose Install. This will add a context menu to XP that allows you to automatically defrag drives, using the command line version of the built-in defragmentation utility. To use it, navigate to a drive in My Computer, right-click, and choose Defrag. A command line window will appear, and that drive will be defragged. When it's complete, the window just disappears.
UPDATE: To remove this functionality, Open regedit.exe and navigate to the following location:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\
Then delete the Defrag folder and close Regedit.

Want to Disable Balloon Tips

Does anybody get annoyed by the balloon that pops up every now and then like an angel instructing me or giving me a friendly reminder about some of my programs or the updates. I find it very annoying and found a way to disable them.
I strongly suggest that you backup your registry before attempting this.
Click start -> run -> regedit -> OK
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\
Create a DWORD value of EnableBalloonTips
Let the DWORD value be 0
Thats it. This should do the trick. If anything goes bad, restore your backed up registry.

Want to Remove the Shared Documents folders from My Computer

One of the most annoying things about the new Windows XP user interface is that Microsoft saw fit to provide links to all of the Shared Documents folders on your system, right at the top of the My Computer window. I can't imagine why this would be the default, even in a shared PC environment at home, but what's even more annoying is that you cannot change this behavior through the shell: Those icons are stuck there and you have to live with it.
Until now, that is.
Simply fire up the Registry Editor and navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ My Computer \ NameSpace \ DelegateFolders
You'll see a sub-key named {59031a47-3f72-44a7-89c5-5595fe6b30ee}. If you delete this, all of the Shared Documents folders (which are normally under the group called "Other Files Stored on This Computer") will be gone.
You do not need to reboot your system to see the change.

RUN MORE THAN ONE WINDOWS VERSION ON SINGLE PC

Are you thinking about trying a new Windows version, such as Windows 2000 or Windows XP? It's possible to run two versions of Windows on a single PC. But setting up a "dual-boot" system takes a little planning and some technical knowledge.
If you want to run Windows 2000 or XP on a system with Windows 95/98 or Me, be sure to follow these rules:
You must have a separate partition or drive, with its own drive letter. Ideally, Windows 9X/Me should go on C:, with Windows 2000/XP on D:. Never, ever try to install two versions of Windows on your C: drive. Install Windows 2000 or XP last, after you get Windows 9X/Me working properly. Then, during Setup, click the Advanced Options button and check the I want to choose the installation partition during Setup box. After you finish setup and restart your computer, you'll be able to choose your operating system from the Windows 2000/XP startup menu. Want to install two versions of Windows 9X or Me on a single computer? If you want Windows 98 and Windows Me on one PC, you must use a third-party "boot manager" program to handle the work.

YOU DONT WANT TO HIGHLIGHT NEWLY INSTALLED PROGRAM??? TRY THIS

Tired of that annoying little window that pops up to tell you that new software is installed? If it gets in the way when you’re logging off, turn it off completely.
To do this
Click Start, right-click at the top of the Start menu where your name is displayed, and then click Properties. In the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties dialog box, on the Start Menu tab, click Customize. Click the Advanced tab, and then clear the Highlight newly installed programs check box. Click OK, and then click OK again. Now that message won’t be popping up when you least want to see it.

THE TRIPLE CLICK TRICK

No, you don't have to know how to skate or dance to do this...
Selecting text can be a fiddly experience, especially if you are using a portable computer with an input device that doesn't work as well as a traditional mouse. So, when you want to cut and paste or copy and paste text, try the triple click. The results vary slightly from one program to another, but most often a single click locates the cursor in the text you are pointing to, a second click highlights the word, and a third click expands the highlighting to the entire paragraph.
This is much faster and more convenient than trying to drag the pointer over a paragraph. After you have highlighted your text, remember to use the right mouse button to access the shortcuts to "cut," "copy" and "paste." There is no point in clicking buttons at the top of the screen or bringing down the Edit menu when the functions you need are right at your finger tip...

GETTING AN OLDER PROGRAM TO RUN ON WINDOWS XP

If an older application gives you trouble when running Windows XP, you can set the compatibility properties manually so that the program runs in a different mode, such as Windows 95, or in a different display or resolution setting. To set the compatibility properties for a program:
Right–click the executable or the program shortcut to the executable, and then click Properties. Select the Run this program in compatibility mode check box. From the list, select an operating system that the program runs in comfortably. If necessary, also change the display settings and/or resolution, or disable the Windows XP visual themes. Run the program again when you’re finished changing the settings. Adjust the compatibility settings again if the program is still not running smoothly: a program that’s unhappy on Windows 2000 may flourish on Windows 98.

HOW TO CLEAR ADULT SEX SITES FROM UR INTERNET BOWSER!!!! THE TRICK IS HERE

Question: I went to a porno site. Hey, I'm only human. But now it's in my Web browser and I want to get rid of it. Other people use the computer. Help!-Anonymous
Answer: This reader's request is a classic. I've seen this question asked dozens of different way. One user said he'd been to "interesting sites" another pleaded for help because his parents were away, but coming back soon.
Anyway, I'm here to help, not to judge, dear reader. On that note, here's how to rid your Web browser of any reference to the material you've viewed. Incidentally it can be used to rid a Web browser of any visited Web site. There are a couple of steps you need to take to clean house. First let's dump the images and site addresses.
Browsers such as Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer save images from visited Web sites on your hard drive whether you click on them or not so that next time you visit you won't have to re-download the image.
But this means that many megabytes of images of all types get saved to you hard drive. Put it this way, if you saw the image then it's on your hard drive.
They also log the address of the site in the browser's history log. To get rid of both, first, figure out which browser you are using.
To do this, start your web browser, the same one you used to visited the site. Click the "Help" menu at the top of your screen and then in the list that drops down click on "About" It may say "About Internet Explorer" or "About Netscape". Choose that option and the web browser's name and version will be displayed. Keep a note of it.
For Internet Explorer, version 4 through 5.5, click on the Tools menu and then click on the Internet Options item. A dialog box will popup. Click "Delete Files" to get rid of cached images. Normally these are either gif or jpg files (something like naughty.jpg or naughty.gif), but they could also be .png files as well, though these are relatively rare. To erase visited web addresses so that they don't appear in the address pulldown menu at the top of the browser, click the "Clear History" button.
For Netscape Navigator, version 6, click on the Edit menu and then click on the Preferences item. A dialog box will popup. Click the arrow next to "Navigator" in the box on the left so that it lists subtopics. Click on the subtopic called "History" then on the right click the "Clear History" button. Also click the "Clear Location Bar" button.
This will get rid of previously visited all web addresses as well as those concealed in the location pulldown menu at the top of the browser window. To get rid of cached images, select "Advanced" and then reveal the subtopics by clicking the arrow next to "Advanced".
Then click "Cache". On the left click both "Clear Memory Cache" to clear images from the current browser session. Click "Clear Disk Cache" to remove image as from the cache folder on the hard drive.
If you have an older browser, click here for further instructions.
Browsers also store visited web site addresses in the pulldown address bar. If switched on, the AutoComplete function will type out previously visited sites if you type the first few letters of the address. It's designed to save time, but if you have visited, lets say, "www.yummysexpots.com" and someone uses the computer after you and wants to go to Yahoo and they type in "www.y" the browser will auto-suggest www.yummysexpots.com, which you may not want.
To turn AutoComplete off in Internet Explorer 5 and later versions go to the Tools menu and choose "Internet Options". Then choose the "Content" tab from the dialog box that pops up and click the "AutoComplete" button and uncheck the Web Addresses box and click "Ok".
In Netscape 6, click the "Edit" menu and then "Preferences". Then select "Navigator" and click the arrow to the left until a list of sub-options appear. Then click "Smart Browsing" and uncheck "Enable Location Bar autocomplete". Then click "Ok". This cannot be turned off in earlier versions of Netscape Navigator.
Older versions of Web browsers don't have this feature built in.
Windows 95/98/Me/2000 users may also want to remove the reference to Web sites in the Documents menu off the Start menu. To do this right click with your mouse on a blank part of the Taskbar (grey strip along the bottom of the screen). Then click Properties. Next click either "Advanced" or the "Start Menu Programs" tab. Click the "Clear" button.
You should also clear your cookies.

ADJUSTING THE DOS WINDOWS

First, the DOS window may not be the size you prefer for readability or just in terms of the arrangement of your screen "real estate." You can't grab the edge of the window and re-size it the way you can with a Windows window. Instead, you must adjust the font. The font adjustment will only be available if the toolbar is turned on...you will see a number of iconic buttons across the top of the window. If you don't see these, right-click the (usually blue) bar across the top of the DOS window and select "Toolbar." Then, you can simply choose from a list of available font options. Note that some of the options will result in the DOS window being larger than your total Windows desktop size (the DOS window will spill outside the edges of your screen). If this happens, you must select a smaller size for the DOS window. If necessary, you will have to "grab" the window with your left mouse button and drag it so that you can access the font selection area. If it is off the left or top of your screen, you will have a hard time readjusting it.
You will also see the familiar copy and paste buttons, but there is no cut button (the scissors). That's because you can't actually cut something from a DOS window because DOS was never designed for cutting and pasting (that's what Mac's and Windows are for). Instead, you can use the "Mark" button to permit you to highlight the area you would like to copy (drag your mouse, just like in Windows). Then select the copy button. Then paste your selection into any Windows program. You can play with the Paste button on the DOS Window too, but it is not very useful.
There is also a "Full screen" button (same as Alt-Enter), and a shortcut to the "Properties" section we looked at last week. If you are a DOS expert, you will appreciate all of the configuration options available in the Properties section. If you don't understand what these options are, then it would be best to leave them alone!
It should be possible, though, to run your favourite DOS program from the past and have it look and feel just the way you want.

OPEN ITEM USING SINGLE CLICK

By default, to 'open' an item on the Windows XP desktop (or inside a folder window), you need to double-click an item. Or, you can click it once to select it. If you'd prefer, however, you can change this option to match a browser window, where holding the mouse pointer over an item selects it and clicking it once 'opens' it.
Open any folder window and click the Folder Options icon (or select Tools, Folder Options). On the General tab, under 'Click items as follows,' select 'Single-click to open an item.'Choose one of the two underlined options, if desired, then click OK.

CHANGE THE LOCATION OF MY MUSIC OR MY PICTURES

In Windows 2000, Microsoft added the ability to right-click the My Documents folder and choose a new location for that folder in the shell. With Windows XP, Microsoft has elevated the My Music and My Pictures folders to the same "special shell folder" status of My Documents, but they never added a similar (and simple) method for changing those folder's locations. However, it is actually pretty easy to change the location of these folders, using the following method.
Open a My Computer window and navigate to the location where you'd like My Music (or My Pictures) to reside. Then, open the My Documents folder in a different window. Drag the My Music (or My Pictures) folder to the other window, and Windows XP will update all of the references to that folder to the new location, including the Start menu.

ALLOW BOOTING TO THE PREVIOUS OPERATING SYSTEM

Allow Booting to the Previous Operating System(Windows 9x)If you installed an upgrade version of Windows 9x, you can normally press F4 to boot your previous version of Windows. This option can be disabled.
1. Change the attributes for MSDOS.SYS so it is not 'Read Only', MSDOS.SYS is found in the root directory of your C:\ drive. Open the file using Notepad or another text editor (not Microsoft Word or any word processor).
2. Change the value of 'BootMulti=' to 'BootMulti=1' for F4 enabled or 'BootMulti=0' for disabled.
3. Changes will take place on the next reboot.
Registry Settings: Key: [MSDOS.SYS]Data: BootMulti=1 (default)

CHANGE THE COLOUR PALETTE OF WINDOWS

Want to give your Windows XP desktop a new look? Right click the desktop, select Properties and click the Appearance tab. Assuming you like the Windows XP look and feel (buttons, scrollbars, and so on), leave Windows XP selected under Windows and Buttons. Then click the down arrow under Color Scheme and choose a new color palette. Once you've made your selection, click OK to keep the change.
At the time of this writing, using Windows XP RC1, the only choices available other than the default blue were olive green and silver. Maybe they plan to add more?

AUTORUN FOR CD OR DVD CAUSES SLOWDOWN?? TRY THIS

Windows has a feature called Autorun that automatically detects when a CD or DVD has been inserted into the drive. That's nice, but the downside is that in the background, this feature is constantly asking your drive if it has anything new inserted. This can cause your CD Games to "hiccup."
You can turn off this feature in Control Panel. Select the System Icon. Click the Device tab and open the CD/DVD drive. Right-click the name of the drive you want to alter and select Properties. Click the settings tab and uncheck the Auto Insert Notification

DELETING A FILE IN USE BY WINDOWS

If you're using Windows 95, 98, or Me, you can use WININIT.INI to delete this file. Check your Windows folder to see whether WININIT.INI already exists. If not, use Notepad to create a file containing just two lines:
[Rename]
nul=D:\PATHFILENAME.EXT
The portion of the second line after nul= should be the full pathname of the file you want deleted, using short filenames (for example, C:\PROGRA~1... rather than C:\Program Files...). To delete a folder, use dirnul= instead of nul=. If WININIT. INI already exists, simply add the appropriate line to the [Rename] section. Now restart Windows. The file will be deleted during the startup process, as will WININIT.INI itself.
Under Windows 2000 and Windows NT4, deleting a file that's in use is more difficult. Your best bet is to restart Windows and try to delete the file before you do anything else.

CREATE A PERSONAL SCREEN SAVER

For a great way to put your digital photos to work, try creating a slide show presentation for use as a screen saver.
Right–click an empty spot on your desktop, and then click Properties. Click the Screen Saver tab. In the Screen saver list, click My Pictures Slideshow. Click Settings to make any adjustments, such as how often the pictures should change, what size they should be, and whether you’ll use transition effects between pictures, and then click OK. Now your screen saver is a random display of the pictures taken from your My Pictures folder.

CUSTMIZE WHAT DIRECTORY WINDOWS EXPLORER OPEN WITH

Customize the Windows XP Explorer: How you can customize what directory Windows Explorer opens with!
If your tired of Windows Explorer always opening up with My Documents. You can customize it, by changing the properties for the Windows Explorer icon and replace the Target field with:%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /n, /e, c:\yourfolder
This also works with Professional and Server.

SAVE PDF FILES WHERE U WANT

This is the cheap way of extracting text data from a PDF file.
To do this open the PDF file with Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0, a free program available for download from Adobe at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html.
Select the text tool, which looks like a "T" on the toolbar and drag it over the text in the PDF document and then use the copy command from the Edit menu.
Pop into the program you want to put the text into and go to its "Edit" menu and select "Paste".

WANT TO DISABLE RECYCLE BIN

Disable the Recycle Bin (Windows 98/Me/2000/XP)

This setting is used to disable the use of the recycle bin and permanently remove all deleted items instead. This enables the same functionality as holding the Shift key while deleting items.
Open your registry and find the key below.
Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value, called 'NukeOnDelete' and edit the value according to the settings below.
Exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the change to take effect.

Name Type Data --------------------------------------------------------------------- (Default) REG_SZ (value not set) NukeOnDelete REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion...
Settings Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\BitBucket]Value Name: NukeOnDeleteData Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)Value Data: (0 = use recycle bin, 1 = permanently delete)

CREATE A BOOTABLE FLOPPY DISK IN MS DOS

You can easily create a bootable floppy disk by following these steps:
Place a blank disk in the floppy disk drive. Click Start, and then click My Computer. Right–click the floppy disk drive, and then click Format on the shortcut menu. Click Create an MS–DOS startup disk, and then click Start. Now you’re on your way to a bootable startup disk.

ADD-REMOVE OPTIONAL FEATUES OF WINDOWS XP

IT works in Windows XP, and can be quite useful: For some reason, Microsoft has removed the ability to specify which Windows components you want to install during interactive Setup, and when you go into Add/Remove Windows Components in the Control Panel, you still don't have the full list of applications and applets you can add and remove. Thankfully, this is easy to fix.
To dramatically expand the list of applications you can remove from Windows XP after installation, navigate to C:\WINDOWS\inf (substituting the correct drive letter for your version of Windows) and open the sysoc.inf file. Under Windows XP Professional Edition RC1, this file will resemble the following by default:
[Version] Signature = "$Windows NT$"DriverVer=06/26/2001,5.1.2505.0
[Components]NtComponents=ntoc.dll,NtOcSetupProc,,4

[Global]
WindowTitle=%WindowTitle%
WindowTitle.StandAlone="*"
The entries that include the text hide or HIDE will not show up in Add/Remove Windows Components by default. To fix this, do a global search and replace for ,hide and change each instance of this to , (a comma). Then, save the file, relaunch Add/Remove Windows Components, and tweak the installed applications to your heart's content.

ADD FIELDS TO THE DETAILS VIEW OF FOLDER

You can add other columns to the Details view of the files contained in Windows XP folders, such as Comments, Description, Category, and many others. To add new columns:
Right–click the column header of the files list, and then click one of the fields listed, or click More. In the Choose Details dialog box, you can reorganize the order of column headers, specify column widths, and add columns to display details for the files in that folder. When you click the new column header, the width of the selected column is displayed in pixels in the Choose Details dialog box.

MODIFY EVERY VIRTUAL FEATURE IN WINDOWX XP

One of the most full featured Windows XP configuration tools available is hidden right there in your system, but most people don't even know it exists. It's called the Local Group Policy Editor, or gpedit for short. To invoke this editor, select Start and then Run, then type the following: gpedit.msc
After you hit ENTER, you'll be greeted by gpedit, which lets you modify virtually every feature in Windows XP without having to resort to regedit. Dig around and enjoy!
